The Chronic Pain Network is one of five networks to receive funding through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) and represents an unprecedented level of collaboration amongst national stakeholders. Working with patients as partners, the Network supports, coordinates and synchronizes leading innovative and high-impact research with the ultimate goal of removing barriers to better chronic pain management.

The Chronic Pain Centre of Excellence provides national leadership for research co-designed with veterans and their families, and supports the implementation of this research with a national network of clinics to help veterans and their families manage their pain and reconnect with life. Thanks to funding from Veterans Affairs Canada, the Chronic Pain Centre of Excellence for Canadian Veterans is a world leader in veteran-first chronic pain research and care.

The Department of Anesthesia is part of the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University. The department has experienced steady growth over the last 10 years and is currently comprised of 34 full-time faculty and 165 part-time faculty. Recent highlights for the McMaster Department of Anesthesia include significant faculty recruitment, a significant increase in contributions to education, research, and administration at the local, national, and international levels; and the use of simulation technologies to teach clinical skills and to explore their potential use in distance medicine.

MIRA is a McMaster University cross-faculty research institute for advancing the science of aging. Aging is a social force worldwide and the rising age of our population profoundly impacts individuals, families, communities and health and social care systems. While the growing population of older adults in Canada should be celebrated as a success, there are also challenges in developing policies and solutions that consider the older adults and citizens who will be most impacted. MIRA’s approach is to conduct research in cross-faculty teams and engage the older adult community, their families, healthcare providers and other key stakeholders through every stage of our activities, from research to evaluation and implementation of interventions and technologies.

The Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Medicinal Cannabis Research is a multidisciplinary leader in medicinal cannabis research. The Centre is led by the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine Initiative for Innovation in Healthcare at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. This initiative leverages McMaster University’s world-renowned expertise in health research and evidence-based medicine to create a hub for evidence-based data and innovative research. The Centre is a partnership between McMaster University, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, the Peter Boris Centre for Addictions Research and the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.

The Michael G. DeGroote Pain Clinic consists of an interdisciplinary team with expertise in the management and treatment of chronic pain. As leaders in innovation and evidence based practices, their team works in collaboration with the patient, their family and referral sources. Their goal is to support adaptive changes to improve daily functioning, productivity and overall quality of life. Through exemplary care chronic pain patients are empowered to improve their quality of life.

The Michael G. DeGroote National Pain Centre was established in 2010 through a generous gift from Michael G. DeGroote. The centre draws on McMaster’s expertise in evidence-based medicine to identify, collate, review, revise, update and develop clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of pain. Guidelines are then disseminated using best practice techniques of knowledge translation. Its mission is to improve the management of pain through the dissemination of best practice information.

The Society for Perioperative Research and Care’s mandate is to bring together learners, clinicians and researchers engaged in perioperative edicine and to promote its practice globally. The Society is dedicated to promoting perioperative education and research and ensuring optimal perioperative care informed by the best research evidence. Its members provide information, education, mentoring and support for all learners, practicing clinicians and scientists involved in preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative patient care.
